I didn’t grow up eating fried chicken. My family didn’t eat meat directly off the bone. It truly wasn’t something I even tried until I went off to college. I was introduced to many new foods in Texas and one of them was dat fried chicken!
It was love at first bite. Fried chicken is delicious, no doubt. Lip-smacking, finger-licking, damn-good-eatin’. Then, panic set in. A food this good couldn’t possibly be healthy – drenched in flour AND then fried.
Over the past 50 years, we’ve been led to believe that eating fat isn’t good for us – essentially making us fear everything about the word “fat” – eating fat raises cholesterol, fat makes you fat, eating too much fat can cause heart disease. Well, times they are a-changing.
According to UrbanDictionary.com, fried chicken can be defined in many ways. Here are a couple of my favorites: “a superior method of preparing chicken for consumption, commonly associated with bad health” and “fried chicken is good ass chicken that has been deep fried in fat or grease”.
If those definitions don’t make you want to try fried chicken – a superior method of preparing chicken for consumption – I don’t know what will. I mean, what could possibly be better than hot and moist fried chicken?
Well, in order to help answer that question, I felt that the only choice I had was to try Yellowbelly’s fried chicken. I knew it had to be healthier than any of the other fast-casual fried chicken joints. All in the name of research, I say. I know, I know, so not paleo; oh, paleo police, I do hope to avoid the feeling of metal around my wrists.
As I arrived at Yellowbelly for my fried chicken experience, I was anxious. Thoughts ran through my mind quickly, “ok, I’m excited, but a little nervous. this could turn out to be very dangerous if the fried chicken is good. uh, wait, no, I can’t really be here right now. how long has it been since I indulged in fried chicken? am I going to pay for this tomorrow?”
Once the plate of fried chicken had been delivered to the table, excitement set in – I was pumped! I started with the fried dark meat – all eyes were upon me as I took my first bite. I couldn’t believe how delicious it was, (well, actually, yeah, I could – everything these guys put on their menu is nothing short of spectacular) – hot, moist, and juicy – it couldn’t have tasted better. I was beyond impressed – it was perfectly put together – the breading didn’t fall off, the chicken was super tender, and I finished the last morsel wanting more – oh, yes, this could be very dangerous!
Fat from natural, unprocessed foods, especially saturated fat is, ahem, healthy – we should absolutely be eating fats in our diet. Fat is necessary to process fat-soluble vitamins, which are of utmost importance to our health – the health of our eyes, bones, heart, skin, reproductive organs, immune system, lungs, and emotions. Fat helps to stabilize our appetite by making us feel full – eating fat is one of the easiest ways to eat less without sacrificing satisfaction. We wouldn’t have strong cells if it weren’t for fat. I could go on and on about the benefits of fats in our diet. But, we can sum it up in four words – fat makes you phat.
Say it with me, “FAT MAKES YOU PHAT.”
In no way am I advocating eating tons and tons of fat OR buckets and buckets of fried chicken. While fat is necessary, moderation is a necessity.
After indulging in Yellowbelly’s fried chicken, I really wanted, er, needed to put my money where my mouth was.
Comparing the colonel’s fried chicken nutritional facts to Yellowbelly’s nutritional facts, I found that Yellowbelly’s fried white meat chicken has:
- 22% fewer calories
- 44% fewer fat grams
- 1.2% fewer saturated fat grams
And, Yellowbelly’s fried dark meat chicken has:
- 19.62% fewer calories
- 44% fewer fat grams
- 37% fewer saturated fat grams
As it turns out, my hypothesis was right – Yellowbelly Chicken has the healthiest fried chicken around!
